Oregon Joint Ways and Means Subcommittee to consider higher education budget
The Joint Ways and Means Subcommittee on Education will start to consider the Oregon University System (OUS) budget for the 2013-15 biennium on March 20. The subcommittee has scheduled five hearings on House Bill 5031 (the Oregon University System budget bill) and will make recommendations to the full Ways and Means Committee on allocations for the Oregon University System.

Congress makes progress toward CR; UO joins AAU and APLU opposing cuts to NSF Political Science program
Last week Congress made progress on a continuing resolution (CR) to keep the federal government funded through the end of the fiscal year September 30, 2013. The Senate is now considering legislation that the House passed last week to maintain government funding and avoid a shutdown after the current continuing resolution expires on March 27th.

Andy Hill joins Government and Community Relations as student legislative assistant

Tuition equity bill passes Oregon House
On February 22, the Oregon House approved a bill that will allow undocumented children to obtain in-state tuition at a four-year college in Oregon after graduating high school.

Sequestration deadline passes; UO research VP launches site to track impact
Sequestration officially took effect on Friday, March 1. With the failure of Congress to pass legislation, President Obama was force to issue an $85 billion dollar cut, effective over the next seven months.

Reverse Vendor Trade Fair demonstrates UO is “open for business”
The third UO Reverse Vendor Trade Fair took place February 27 at the Club Room at Autzen Stadium. The event, organized by UO Purchasing and Contracting Services, provides an opportunity for minority, women owned, emerging small business contractors and other vendors to learn about contracting opportunities with the UO and other public agencies.

State investment in Allen Hall renovation and expansion recognized at grand opening
On March 1, the University of Oregon celebrated the grand opening of a renovated and expanded Allen Hall, home to the School of Journalism and Communication. The three-story transformation added 18,000 square feet to the building, which serves more than 2,000 students.
