The University of Oregon has been nationally recognized for its leadership in economic engagement, earning the Innovation & Economic Prosperity (IEP) designation from the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU). This recognition reflects the UO’s role as a catalyst for innovation, a partner in workforce development, and a driver of community vitality across Oregon and beyond.

What the Designation Means

The IEP Program recognizes universities with a comprehensive, sustainable strategy for regional economic engagement. Institutions earn the designation by completing a rigorous self-assessment and engaging stakeholders to identify strengths and opportunities for growth. At the UO, this process began in October 2024 with a comprehensive self-study that included surveys, interviews, and focus groups to evaluate the university’s current economic development efforts and identify areas for deeper collaboration.

The IEP designation reflects the UO’s strengths in three interconnected areas:

  1. Talent & Workforce Development: Equipping graduates with the skills local industries need to grow and succeed, while addressing workforce shortages across the region.
  2. Innovation & Entrepreneurship: Fostering breakthroughs and supporting startups through cutting-edge research facilities like the Papé Family Innovation Center and programs like Launch Oregon.
  3. Place Development: Engaging with communities to strengthen the social, cultural, and economic fabric of the Southern Willamette Valley.

Why It Matters

Oregon’s future depends on strong partnerships between universities, businesses, and communities. As the state’s flagship public research university, the UO is committed to preparing students for meaningful careers, advancing research that drives innovation, and working with partners to build a stronger, more resilient economy for all Oregonians.

What’s Next?

Earning this designation is part of the university’s broader commitment to economic engagement. Building on the insights gained through the IEP process, the UO is implementing strategies to strengthen industry partnerships, streamline collaboration, and better align academic programs with workforce needs.
