Collaborating for Economic Growth

The UO's Roadmap to Regional Growth

Yellow text on green background. Text reads, Knowledge. Innovation. Impact.

The University of Oregon is undergoing an exciting process to assess and enhance our role in driving economic growth, strengthening communities, and supporting businesses across the region. As part of this process, the university is pursuing an Innovation & Economic Prosperity (IEP) designation from the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU)—a nationally recognized designation for universities making a measurable impact in economic and community development.

At the UO, the process is centered on three interconnected pillars:

  1. Talent & Workforce Development – Equipping graduates with the skills local industries need to grow and succeed, while addressing workforce shortages across the region.
  2. Innovation & Entrepreneurship – Fostering breakthroughs and supporting startups through cutting-edge research facilities like the Papé Family Innovation Center and programs like Launch Oregon.
  3. Place Development – Engaging with communities to strengthen the social, cultural, and economic fabric of the Southern Willamette Valley.

This process isn’t about quick fixes; it’s about listening, evaluating, and improving how the UO supports workforce development, innovation, and community engagement.

Why We’re Doing This

The IEP designation process gives the University of Oregon an opportunity to:

  • Assess our current contributions to regional economic development.
  • Identify areas for growth and new opportunities to partner with businesses and communities.
  • Strengthen collaborations that enhance research, workforce development, and entrepreneurship.
