Oregon Legislature convenes 2013 session


The Oregon Legislature officially began its 77th session on Jan. 14 with organization days and will reconvene on Feb. 4 to start regular business. It will consider many issues important to higher education and the University of Oregon this year, including higher education funding (see article on Governor’s Recommended Budget), higher education governance and tuition equity.

Fed update: House approves bill to suspend debt ceiling until mid-May


Under pressure to avoid the threat of a government default, the US House of Representatives on January 23 approved legislation (H.R. 325) to suspend the debt ceiling until May 18.

Eugene City Council recognizes UO Volleyball Team


The UO volleyball team was recognized on Jan. 14 by the Eugene City Council for its most successful season in history, including participation in the NCAA national championship game. Eleven players and four coaches attended the meeting to receive accolades from Mayor Kitty Piercy and pose for photos with city leaders.

Governor’s Recommended Budget includes UO priorities


Gov. John Kitzhaber released his recommended budget on Nov. 30, outlining his priorities in the upcoming session. The budget document proposed sweeping reforms to the structure of higher education in Oregon in addition to making investment in key strategic areas for higher education in the state.
