Jackie Joyner-Kersee was dubbed “The Greatest Female Athlete of the 20th Century” by Sports Illustrated. Jackie’s athletic accomplishments have been well documented; less well known are her tireless efforts and remarkable accomplishments off the field as a philanthropist and an advocate for children’s education, health issues, racial equality, social reform and women’s rights.
Following her remarks, Joyner-Kersee will be joined by a panel of UO faculty and students in a moderated discussion as well to answer questions from the audience.
About the initiatives:
The Diversity Initiative is one piece of the important anti-racism work our university is undertaking to create a more inclusive, equitable, and diverse institution. This initiative aims to build inclusive academic excellence and a more diverse faculty presence at UO immediately, as we seek to better represent and be more welcoming to students, faculty, and staff of color. The Sport and Wellness Initiative will extend the University of Oregon’s already strong reputation and leadership in the field by delivering a new model of transdisciplinary education and research that recognizes the integrated nature of sport and wellness fields. Programs, courses, research, and partnerships are structured to train the next generation of leaders in the space and address complex sport and wellness problems with innovative and applied solutions that benefit all people across ages, abilities, and health.
