Ducks Off Campus: Moving Out

Plan ahead

Storage, donation pickup, and disposal options can fill up quickly near the end of the school year.

Do not leave items outside

Leaving furniture or belongings outside your rental can affect neighbors and may lead to charges from your landlord or the city.

Ask before you dump

Overfilled trash containers, large items, electronics, and mattresses may require special handling.

Storing items between rentals

If you are moving out of one rental before moving into another, consider your storage options early.

  • Free option: A friend, family member, or colleague may have space where you can store items for free.
  • Low-cost storage option with free pickup and delivery: UO students living on or off campus can use Campus Storage, University Housing’s summer storage partner. Campus Storage offers free pickup and delivery of your boxed belongings, bed, desk, couches, etc., with storage fees based on the items stored over summer. Reserve storage.
  • Private storage: Many private storage options are available in the Eugene-Springfield area. Costs vary, though private storage units typically rent for $100 or more per month, and you will usually need to transport items to the storage unit yourself.
Selling or giving away items

You can always offer items to friends, roommates, classmates, or others you know for free. You can also sell items online or through resale platforms.

  • Give items away responsibly: Offer items directly to people who can use them. Please do so in a way that does not impact your neighborhood; it is not appropriate or legal to leave items outside your dwelling or on the sidewalk for others to take.
  • Selling items: Students often use platforms such as Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, Poshmark, and Depop. The UO does not endorse any specific platform.
  • Be safe: Meet buyers in public places when possible, do not share unnecessary personal information, and use caution when arranging pickup from your home.
Donating reusable items

If your items are still usable, consider donating them instead of throwing them away.

If you need donation pickup

  • St. Vincent de Paul donation pickup: Offers limited free donation pickup in Eugene, Springfield, and surrounding communities, subject to approval and scheduling.
  • St. Vincent de Paul mattress recycling: Offers mattress and box spring recycling options. Check current pickup and drop-off details before making plans.
  • BRING Recycling pickup: Offers limited pickup for approved reusable building and household materials. Review accepted items and pickup instructions before scheduling.

Other disposal options

Some items cannot go in regular trash, and overfilling trash containers may lead to charges. Contact your trash hauler or property manager if you are unsure how to dispose of large items or extra trash.

  • Glenwood Transfer Station: Accepts garbage and many recyclable materials for a fee. Check current fees and accepted items before you go.
  • NextStep Recycling: Accepts many electronics for recycling. Fees may apply.
  • Private junk haulers: Private haulers, such as Junkluggers, may remove unwanted items for a fee. Prices vary, so ask for a quote and confirm whether items will be donated, recycled, or disposed of.
  • Do not dump items: Do not leave furniture, mattresses, trash, or electronics outside your rental, in alleys, or near dumpsters. You may be charged by your landlord, trash hauler, or the City of Eugene.
